Three for ‘08Chris Sullivan

Struggling for ideas on what has been a cold, wet, and miserable Friday, I’ve decided to take a quick glance at what’s on the horizon.  Coming off what many have considered the best year in gaming history, 2008 has some pretty big shoes to fill. Here’s the three games destined to deliver:

MLB ‘08: The Show - This one’s a slam dunk. MLB ‘07: The Show was arguably the best console sports game ever made, and after Mark’s rave review of the demo that released last week, ‘08 has the potential to be even better. There were no major changes to the gameplay, with the graphics and gameplay receiving the brunt of the SCEA development team’s attention this past year. Working scoreboards, increased crowd interaction, and the most realistic baseball experience you’ll find on any console; MLB ‘08: The Show is a Sony exclusive, and is due to release in early March…just in time for Spring Training.

Gears of War 2 - Just announced at the Game Developers Conference this week, Gears of War 2 will once again be exclusive to the Xbox 360. Cliffy B, the lead designer for Epic Games, promises that we’re in for a treat.

“To our team the original game was just a tease, the appetizer to the ‘Gears of War’ characters and new style of gameplay. We were so amped to get to the next chapter, and dig deeper into the universe of this franchise,” said Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer for Epic Games. “‘Gears of War 2′ is an even bigger, better, and more badass experience than the first game, and we can’t wait to get it in the hands of eager gamers this November.”

One thing’s for certain, there will be blood, and plenty of it. Gears of War 2 is scheduled to hit store shelves in November of 2008.

Resistance 2 (working title) - Another Sony exclusive, the sequel to Resistance: Fall of Man is set to go head to head with Gears of War 2 this upcoming holiday season. Right now, we’re hearing 8 player co-op online, as well as up to 60 players in online competitive play, to go along with the a offline campaign mode. If Insomniac can deliver on these features, Resistance just might have what it takes to finally put the Playstation Network on the map.

Wow, Sully I would have put MGS4 above Resistance 2 any day. ;)

Obviously, it’s personal preference, but I’d put the Splinter Cell series over the Metal Gear series. Unfortunately, I believe the online aspect of the SC games was removed from Conviction, which has dampened my excitement for that game severely.
